Bitter Gourd or karela, it’s a distinctive vegetable which can be used as food and medicine. Bitter gourd is of old world origin and is a native of tropical Asia, particularly in the Indo Burma region. Momordica charantia is a tropical and subtropical vine of the family Cucurbitaceae. It’s extensively cultivated in India and China.
Bitter gourd is one of the important vegetables grown in south Indian states, especially in Kerala, by naming Pavakka/Kaipakka in Malayalam. Planting is done in July and January. Bitter gourd is generally grown in summer as well as in the rainy season. In South and Central India, it can be cultivated around the year.
Bitter gourd is used to make stir fry, chips, curry, pulusu/ stew, pickles and even to make pakora. The most popular south Indian dishes like theeyal, pachadi & this dish is pretty tasty and brings a unique flavor to the table. Bitter gourd is a rich source of vitamins and minerals and it contains iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins like A and C.
